AmDTuning.com battles to triple score at Oulton Park
13th June 2012The AmDTuning.com team secured three more points finishes on a difficult weekend at Oulton Park as the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship season resumed after a spring break.
The West Thurrock-based team headed into the weekend eager to try and benefit from changes made to its turbo-powered Volkswagen Golf in recent weeks.
After a damp opening practice session, things went awry for the team in second practice when a brake issue saw Attleborough-based driver Ollie Jackson spin off track and into the barriers at Cascades. Hard work from the team saw the Golf repaired for qualifying, where Ollie secured 20th on the grid.
The opening race turned out to be one of attrition but Ollie was able to stay out of trouble to bring the car home in eleventh place, despite suffering from a misfire as the race wore on.
Race two saw another points finish with Ollie coming home in 15th place despite the fact he was forced to make an unscheduled stop to remove grass from the radiator after being forced off track and also had to contend with a broken engine mount.
A reoccurrence of the misfire in race three saw Ollie again forced to pit and dropped him off the lead lap, while he was then involved in a collision with Aron Smith at the Island Hairpin when the Safety Car was deployed a second time and a following car failed to slow with the remainder of the field. Despite that, he brought the Golf to the finish in 15th position to add another points finish to his championship tally.
“In a word, I’d say it’s been tragic,” he reflected. “It really did turn into a weekend to forget. I have to hold my hands up a bit and admit I could have done better, but we’ve also had a number of issues that we have had to deal with. It’s a shame that the car was faultless in the recent test and then wasn’t when we arrived at Oulton Park but we’ll move onwards and upwards next time out.
“The potential is there in the Golf and I have to thank the team for doing a great job as I didn’t make it easy for them with the incident on Saturday. I’m sure our luck will turn soon.”
Team boss Shaun Hollamby admitted it had been a frustrating race day for the team, with focus now switching firmly to the next round at Croft in a fortnight where AmDTuning.com will seek to show the true potential of the Golf.
“The positive is that the change to the suspension has improved the handling of the car and we found a brake issue that we have worked on,” he said. “Ollie did a good job but unfortunately we had a misfire on race day that we need to look at and the higher temperatures today have also shown us some things on the data that we will investigate and improve for Croft. Despite all that, we’ve scored points in all three races and eleventh is our second best result of the year, so we still have something to show for the weekend.”
