Bahamas Speed Week Revivial

18th June 2012

28th NOVEMBER to 2nd DECEMBER

Now the Entry Packs have been published, things are hotting up, quite literally, for the organisers. Event Director, David McLaughlin is currently in Nassau dealing with all the requests from potential Partners, as well as signing multi-year deals with Partners from 2011 who want to continue their association following the success of last year's event. With so many new venues wanting to be a part of the event, Speed Week could turn into Speed Month if it wanted to! But keeping it to (just over) a week, the schedule currently looks like this:

(New for 2012) Saturday 24th November
Speed Week Concert - Arawak Cay
Auto Trade Show

(New for 2012) Sunday 25th November
Antique Auto Club Show - Arawak Cay

(New for 2012) Lunch-time Beach Party
Bay Street Roadshow & Party

Saturday 1st December
Fort Charlotte Hillclimb
(New for 2012) Formula Kart Stars Racing
Pictet Charity Gala Ball

Sunday 2nd December
Arawak Cay Heritage Village Sprint
(New for 2012) Vintage Formula Vee Demonstration
(New for 2012) Formula Junior Demonstration
(New for 2012) Transatlantic Kart Challenge
(New for 2012) Celebrity Kart Challenge
Awards Presentation

With such a packed schedule it's difficult to pick out the highlights but, based on the elements the 2011 Entrants continue to talk about most, they would have to be - the Opening Ceremony with its introduction to the infectious Junkanoo and local tipple 'Sky Juice'; the honour of being invited to the historic Government House; the high-speed sightseeing (007) tour en-route to Lyford Cay and the Lyford Cay event itself; the enexpectedly challenging Hillclimb; and, of course, our Police escort who took us everywhere we wanted to go and for whom no traffic light, road junction, one-way street or speed limit was to prove an obstacle! 2012 Patron, Sir Stirling Moss

If there is one driver's name synonymous with the Bahamas Speed Weeks it is that of Stirling Moss. Stirling was always known for his love of the sun and a pretty girl and these were in abundance in the Bahamas in the 50s just as they are today. Stirling first appeared in 1955 driving a works-entered Healey 100/6 and Speed Week immediately became an event at the top of his winter schedule. He went on to become a multiple winner in a huge variety of cars.

Sir Stirling Moss was Patron of the First Annual Speed Week in 2011 and amazed everyone with his energy and enthusiasm. Retirement Sir Stirling?, not judging by his 100mph-plus performance driving his very own OSCA on the 007 Island Tour! Indeed his constant companion and co-driver Lady Susie remarked afterwards... "The police motorcycle outriders were amazing, that was better organised and more fun than the Mille Miglia!" Praise indeed...
