Bahamas Speed week Revival goes Back to the Future
23rd July 2012
One of the more unusual cars to find its way onto this years Bahamas Speed Week entry list is an absolutely mint example of the infamous DeLorean - star of the award-winning Back to the Future film trilogy of the 1980s. Although DeLoreans are now back in small-scale production, this particular DMC 12 is an original 1981 model, making it one of the original Supercars to achieve cult status.
Some of the entries in the Race Car class will be making a return visit to the Bahamas one of these is the gorgeous ex-Jack Brabham Cooper Monaco that he campaigned there in 1959 with glass splinters in his eye after his goggles shattered! It will be joined, amongst others, by a pristine Briggs Cunningham Maserati Tipo 63 (Birdcage) and a factory Jaguar C-Type that will see 2012 Patron Sir Stirling Moss reunited with one of his old mounts. Aston Martins are like moths to a flame as far as The Bahamas are concerned and this class will also feature two beautifully-restored race-prepared examples of the marque. All the more appropriate in this 50th anniversary year of the first James Bond film, when you consider the man himself, Sir Sean Connery, lives at Lyford Cay (one of Speed Week's favourite venues) and has demonstrated more than a passing interest in the event!
Not to be left out, the Touring class will welcome everything from a Ferrari 365 GTC through a Mercedes 190 SL (making a welcome return visit from 2011) to a Mini Cooper 1275 S purchased especially for the event.
In addition to the standard classes, the organisers are hoping for a couple more Formula Juniors to complete the complement of cars scheduled to provide demonstration races as the forerunner to bringing full-blown racing back to the island, plans for which are already far advanced.
And far from stopping at simply bringing their cars and co-drivers, a number of this years Entrants are packing out the social events with family and friends too. It seems everyone wants a piece of the action!
Each entry package is for TWO people and includes shipping the car to the Bahamas (containerised from Felixstowe for UK Entrants and on a specially-chartered Roll-On/Roll-Off ferry from West Palm Beach for US Entrants), event entry fees and all hospitality. For 2012, entries will strictly be limited to 60 and spaces are filling fast so for the opportunity to have some high-octane fun in the sun, please contact Entrant Co-ordinator Carol Mason carol@bahamasspeedweek.com / +44 (0) 7710 877770. www.bahamasspeedweek.com
