Bumper crowd anticipated as BTCC title race resumes at Oulton Park
29th May 2012The North West is less than two weeks away from its biggest motor sport event of the year – the latest round of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship at Cheshire’s famous Oulton Park circuit on the weekend of 9/10 June.
After a month’s break the stars of the UK’s premier motor racing championship are currently preparing to roar back into action on what is regarded as one of the most picturesque yet daunting tracks on the calendar with a reputation for conjuring up controversy. Indeed, it was at Oulton 12 months ago that Honda drivers Matt Neal and Gordon Shedden infamously crashed into one another before recovering to finish first and second in the championship later in the year.
Furthermore Oulton annually attracts one of the biggest BTCC crowds of the year thanks to the venue’s hugely popular camping culture and festival atmosphere, easy access from the M6 and M62 motorways networks plus a vast catchment area which includes the cities of Chester, Manchester, Liverpool, Lancaster and Wrexham. This is truly as much a major social occasion as it is a high-profile sporting event…
Double Champion Jason Plato and his MG KX Momentum Racing team will arrive at Oulton leading the current standings, albeit by a slender margin. Honda pair Shedden and Neal, the reigning Champion, are just a few points adrift, themselves closely followed by Redstone Racing Ford Focus and eBay Motors BMW aces Mat Jackson and Robert Collard respectively.
Oulton also marks the home event on the calendar for several teams and drivers. Preston team and driver Dynojet and Frank Wrathall will go into the event on a confidence high having fought off Plato’s MG for a podium result in the most recent race (at Thruxton, Hampshire) with their Toyota Avensis.
Wrathall is very much one of a number of emerging stars in the BTCC as could be fellow Preston racer Adam Morgan who also drives a Toyota, for Stockport squad Speedworks Motorsport. Its second driver Tony Hughes is one of the town’s most successful businessmen – he recently addressed a Government campaign to support small to medium-sized companies in the Houses of Parliament – as well as a staunch supporter of its bid for city status!
In addition to the headlining BTCC’s latest three races of 2012, visitors to Oulton Park on the weekend of 9/10 June will also be treated to plenty more thrills and spills on track from the top notch supporting Porsche Carrera Cup GB, Renault Clio Cup, Ginetta GT Supercup and Ginetta Junior categories.
Tickets for the event remain available to purchase at special advance rates, starting at just £25 for the main race day (Sunday). Admission for accompanied children aged 12 and under is FREE all weekend. All admission includes access to the huge spectator banks that overlook the spectacular undulating Oulton track as well as the BTCC teams’ paddock plus an autograph session in the pit lane with the star touring car drivers.
