Cracking good day at Castle Combe Classic and Sports Car Action Day
3rd July 2012
The Classic & Sports Car Action Day at Castle Combe Circuit last Saturday saw not only some great classic cars but also some more unusual cars take their turn on this historic race circuit to the great enjoyment of attending crowds.
The event offers the chance for clubs and drivers to get together, display their cars and if they wish, to get out on the historic 1.85 mile circuit. Laps can be at speed or clubs can purchase Parade Laps where steady cruising is more the order of the day.
Saturday saw a slight step away from ‘the norm’ however as two very special guests made an appearance at the event and even took to the circuit in the public parade laps and the lunchtime giant classic cruise. These two guests – the Cadbury Crème Egg car and a 1959 Austin A35 which, bar its colour, is virtually identical to the Anti-Pesto van used in ‘Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit’, were a sight for sore eyes and left visitors questioning whether they had really seen a giant Crème Egg out on the track!
Marketing and Events Manager, Jo Sparrow, confirmed: “We invited the Cadbury Crème Egg car to the event as, having worked with it before, I know the appeal it has for young and old alike. We were never 100% sure in the event build-up whether we would get it out on the circuit so it was a real pleasure to see it out there cruising amongst Marcos, Spyders, MGFs and more!
“We allowed the two cars to lead both the public parade laps and the lunchtime classic cruise. I have to admit the driver of the Cadbury Crème Egg’s comment “We won” when they came around the circuit in the lead on one of the public parade laps had to be one of the funniest moments of the day!”
There is a more serious element to the event though and, with over 62 clubs in attendance, and probably one thousand or more cars, awards such as ‘Car of the Show’ and ‘Club of the Show’ were hotly contested.
Two stood out in particular though – the Austin Healey 100-6 which had been lovingly restored by hand over the last 4 years by owner, Dave Emmett of Swindon, took ‘Car of the Show’ whilst the Marcos Owner’s Club took ‘Club of the Show’. Historically manufactured in Westbury in Wiltshire, 2012 is the 40th anniversary year of the Club’s beginning and a great year therefore for them to win the ‘Club of the Show’ award.
The next Action Day at the Circuit is the Forge Performance Action Day on Saturday 8th September. Lovers of all things classic meanwhile can get to see some racing as Castle Combe Circuit welcomes the Classic 50 Race Weekend on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd July 2012.
