Dan Stewart claims Privateers' title as fight for Joey Dunlop Trophy goes to thrilling climax

9th June 2012

Despite winning two out of four races as the 2012 Isle of Man TT heads into its final day, John McGuinness still only has a narrow lead in the overall TT Championship.

The Morecambe rider leads New Zealand’s Bruce Anstey, his Padgetts Honda teammate in the Supersport and Superstock classes, by a mere seven points, with Australian Cameron Donald a further point back.

The winner is likely to come from one of these three, but with 25 points up for grabs Michael Dunlop in 4th has a mathematical chance of overhauling McGuinness as he is 24 points behind the championship leader following his Monster Energy Supersport Race 2 victory.

Championship points are still available from the PokerStars Senior TT, one of the two races scheduled for the final day, which following the postponement today will now take place on Saturday.

The championship points system was introduced in 2009 and previous winners have included Steve Plater, who pipped Ian Hutchinson on the last day in 2009, Hutchy himself in 2010 with his comprehensive five wins in a week and John McGuinness in 2011.

Riders are awarded points based on their final race positions with 25 points available to the winner of each race. The title comes with a prize fund of £10,000.

Dan Stewart has already won the privateers award for self-funded riders having built up an unassailable lead of 39 points going into the final race.

The Barrow man was the highest privateer finisher in the Royal London 360 Superstock race and both Monster Energy Supersport races. However, there is a close battle for the runner up position with three points separating Dan Cooper (44), Stefano Bonetti (42) and Roy Richardson (41).

Stewart will return home with a cheque for £2,000, but the others will be competing for the prize money available to the top three.
