Hamilton signs for Porsche Carrera Cup GB
9th February 2010
Archie Hamilton will race in the 2010 Porsche Carrera Cup GB in the first year of what the teenager is hoping will be a two-year programme to establish himself as a sportscar and GT racer.
Hamilton, who will be 19 just before the start of the season, will join Red Line Racing to contest the pro-am1 category after racing in Formula Ford and Formula Renault. Now, he is making the switch to the Carrera Cup and had his first test with the team at Snetterton last week, with Tim Harvey on hand to offer guidance.
"To get to Formula 1 you need millions of pounds and we don’t have that," said Hamilton. "So we looked at various options and the Carrera Cup looked very good. It’s all about me in the car and the result I get is down to me. It's a big step, but I can't wait."
Sponsors for the 2010 season will be announced shortly and, subject to backing, Hamilton wants to spend two years in the Carrera Cup. "The aim is that I'll do pro-am1 this year and then step up to the pro category for 2011."
Team boss Simon Leonard says that Hamilton will be a rising star of the 2010 season. "He's going to be a good prospect. I'm looking forward to getting him up to speed," said Leonard.
Hamilton comes from famous stock as his grandfather Duncan won the 1953 Le Mans 24-hour winner. Duncan was one of the sport's leading characters of a generation and also competed in more than 20 Formula 1 races, including the British Grand Prix five times between 1948 and 1953.
