Jungle Marathon Success For S4C’s Rallying Presenter Lowri
23rd October 2009
An S4C presenter has successfully completed one of the world’s toughest endurance challenges – the 2009 Jungle Marathon in the Amazon Rainforest.
Swansea-born Lowri Morgan, 35, who presents the S4C’s motorsports programme, Ralïo+, was the highest placed female Briton in the 200km race, which was held over six stages and seven days.
Over 90 participants from all around the world signed up to the challenge with 35 from the United Kingdom. Each competitor was expected to be self-sufficient – to carry their foods and provisions at all times – through the jungle and villages, and along river beds and beaches.
Lowri, who is now back in Wales, says: “I’ve lived with the race for 18 months and so many people have helped me along the way. It’s the hardest thing, physically and mentally, I’ve ever done, but the thoughts of my friends and words of my mother spurred me on. She said ‘Every time you fall pick yourself up and keep going on’ and that’s what I did.”
Lowri’s intense preperations leading up to the marathon and extensive highlights of the challenge itself will be broadcast in a four-part series, Ras yn Erbyn Amser, broadcast on S4C in the New Year.
Before then, Lowri, a former Ysgol Gyfun Gŵyr pupil, can be seen on to S4C on Thursday, 23 October, as part of a bumper weekend of high quality rallying action – to celebrate the World Rally Championship’s final stage in Wales.
The presenter joins Ralïo+ team members, Emyr Penlan, Wyn Gruffydd, Martin John and Howard Davies, as five-time World Champion Sebastian Loeb goes head-to-head with current leader, Mikko Hirvonen over the three-day event.
Ralïo+ offers extensive nightly highlights of the WRC’s final stage of the season, including a special preview edition on Thursday, 22 October (9.50pm). Friday, 23 October (7.00pm), Saturday, 24 October and Sunday, 25 October (7.00pm)
