Li Zhi Cong joins Asia Racing Team for GT Asia Series

3rd May 2012

Asia Racing Team will mark its return to GT Asia Series with a new driver for the 2012 Season. China’s Li Zhi Cong, who raced for Asia Racing Team in single seater last season, will drive a Porsche 911 GT3 R in the full series.

The 18-years old Cong started racing karting at twelve and moved on to Light Weight Sports Car Challenge in 2008, before competing in Asian Formula Renault championship. In 2009 the Guangzhou native did also an one-off incursion on Formula 3 Australian Drivers Championship, before representing Asia Racing Team for the first time in 2010. In 2011 he competed in the Formula Pilota China and was third of the Asian category after claiming two overall podiums, but now he has a whole new challenge ahead of him.

Speaking about the upcoming season after shaking the car down at Zhuhai, the Chinese racer sponsored by Yumin Restaurant said, “I’m really pleased to be returning to a team I know and to be working with some of the people I built up such a good relationship since 2010. GT Racing is a whole new world for me and a season of firsts in a whole new way. But I’m sure that if we continue to work hard during the season, we have a very good chance of challenging for the top positions. Our pace in testing has left me confident for the start of the season and I can’t wait for the first race.”

Asia Racing Team is determined to build on last year successes and to continue its tradition of promoting the very best of Chinese driving talents onto the international racing scene. The Macau Zhuhai based team believes that the GT Asia Series is the Asia’s most competitive sportscar platform and provides an excellent showcase for drivers and their sponsors.

“Li Zhi Cong is very well known to the team and I’m delighted to welcome him back for a season. Last season was our first season with the GT3-R. Eddie Yau and Sasha Chu have delivered some excellent performances which have helped the team move forward and develop,” explained Team Manager Philippe Descombes. “Li Zhi Cong proved in the pre-season testing he could adapt quickly to the demands of driving a GT car. As he has worked with the team a before, this should allow us to get up to speed right from the start of the season.”

The GT Asia Series will head to five venues over six race weekends completing a total of 11 Rounds, with the Season Opener being scheduled for 25-27 May.
