Max Chilton delighted with amazing maiden pole
28th July 2012
Max Chilton secured an incredible pole position ahead of the Hungarian GP2 Series Feature race after a brilliant last lap from the Marussia Carlin driver which took him right to the very top of the time sheets. Despite the tricky conditions at the start of the session following a heavy rain storm, the circuit quickly dried and gave the British driver the perfect lap when he needed it..
A heavy rain shower during the Formula 1 free practice session left the track damp and slippery as the GP2 cars took to the track for qualifying at the Hungaroring this afternoon. With the threat of further rain looking likely Chilton took to the circuit early on to get their lap times on the board. However the damp conditions meant that only a few drivers went out with the majority electing to stay in the pits.
With 10 minutes of the session complete a fast lap from Chilton placed him in third, before he took to the pits.
As the session entered the half-way point, the track had evolved considerably and as a result Chilton had fallen down the order to 25th. Making his way back out on track with about 10 minutes of the session remaining the challenge then became to find a clear part of the track on which to improve his lap time.
With the track getting faster, and Chilton lying in 22nd place, the British racer needed to put in a brilliant lap which he did, to take him up to seventh place. Timing it perfectly Chilton was one of the last to cross the line giving him just enough time for one final flying lap.
Chilton sett his personal best sector times on the very final lap and the Marussia Carlin driver crossed the chequered flag to take an impressive maiden pole for not only himself but also for his Carlin team.
Reflecting on his great performance Chilton said, Im actually a little speechless because I with one minute left of qualifying I was down in 22nd place so we werent expecting that! I had no traffic during the pole lap and the car was just feeling better and better each time I crossed the line.
Im extremely pleased to have taken my maiden pole here and also to know that its the teams first pole too after all the hard work they put in each weekend.
