Mercedes Brawn GP buy out confirmed
16th November 2009
So the rumours are confirmed that Mercedes have bought a controlling interest in Brawn GP. The team will be rebranded as Mercedes GP and probably give the cars a silver paint job.
Not a bad effort from Ross Brawn - creates a team and in his first year wins the title and flogs it to Mercedes - in under 12 months...
Bear in mind Ross started with what was in effect $200m from Honda - $100m in physical assets and $100m in cash - which was still a better deal for Honda than dealing with the liabilities it would have had on dealing with staff redundancies etc
Also looks like Jenson is closer to a deal at Mclaren - think that is going to be tough ask for Jenson- Lewis practically "owns" the team - but sales/marketing guy at Mclaren - Ekrem Sami - would be delighted as the "Lewis and Jenson"driver line up would be a compelling proposition for sponsors.
Actually think the Mclaren move - driver retainer issues not withstanding - makes more sense for Kimi - who would not be phased by Lewis at all.
So Ron and Mansour are going to have to weigh in to buy the mercedes 40% stake back - although it looks like their engine supply deal is secure for a few years.
