Motorsport at the Palace Celebrates Another Successful Meeting
1st June 2012
Over 5,000 visitors attended a spectacular weekend of Motorsport at Crystal Palace, in association with the Ancaster Group. Now in its third year, the annual event in the popular South London park raised over £3,500 for local charities St Christopher's Hospice and The Royal London Society for Blind People.
Despite moving from its traditional May Bank Holiday slot - a consequence of the upcoming Jubilee celebrations - Motorsport at the Palace drew visitors from far and wide, with competitors travelling from all over the country to compete on sections of the famous old circuit.
The event drew praise from all quarters, including Ian Payne, Deputy Mayor of Bromley, who enjoyed a lap of the track in the Ancaster Nissan 370Z Safety Car. My Payne said: "What an excellent event, evident by the number of people supporting. Well done to all who participated and long may this partnership with the London Borough of Bromley continue; it is good to see one of the Parks used in this way."
After two days of thrilling action under glorious late May sunshine, it was newcomer Gary Thomas who secured the coveted accolade of Fastest Time of the Weekend, powering his Force PT machine around the course in just 33.80 seconds and shattering the previous lap record in the process.
Away from the track, the awards for Best Club Stand went to the South London & NW Kent TVR Car Club (Saturday) and the Triumph Stag Club (Sunday), while Jim Needham's Ferrari 250 GTL took the Kleers Premium Car Care Products' award for Best Car of the Show.
Visitors of all ages found plenty to keep them occupied away from the track, with Diggerland's JCBs proving an irresistible lure for wannabe Bob the Builders (young and old alike). The London Karting Company's go-karts proved an equally popular draw, while the Classic Motorcycle Racing Club kept fans of two and three-wheeled machines entertained throughout the weekend.
Martin Chinnery, of organisers Sevenoaks and District Motor Club, said: "What a fantastic weekend of motorsport. It really is wonderful to see so many visitors enjoying this unique event. On behalf of the Club, I'd like to thank all the competitors, exhibitors, sponsors and spectators, who helped make Motorsport at the Palace 2012 such a huge success. We look forward to seeing you all next year!"
