Podium Pace Not Rewarded For Daniel Lloyd At Oulton Porsche Carrera Cup
12th June 2012Porsche Carrera Cup GB Scholar Daniel Lloyd continued his strong run of results during rounds seven and eight of the season at Oulton Park in Cheshire on Sunday, 10th June, with fourth and fifth place finishes – although the Huddersfield racer was disappointed to miss out on a potential victory.
Starting the second encounter from third on the grid, the 20-year-old produced the best getaway of his debut season so far and rocketed into second place on the tail of pole-sitter Michael Meadows through Old Hall corner.
Glued to the rear of the experienced championship leader’s Porsche 911, Daniel was just 0.3 seconds behind into lap two and confident of pressuring Meadows for first place. Everything went awry at the hairpin though when Meadows encountered coolant on the track – the result of a lap one incident
The rogue fluid caught-out the race leader and that in turn put Daniel on the slippery part of the track, meaning he lost out on the exit to Jonas Gelzinis. Recovering in third, the Team Parker Racing driver then encountered more misfortune when another patch of coolant at the chicane cost him the place.
After slipping to fifth place on lap five, the TNT Post, TSD, Creechurch Private Wealth, Propack and TPA Yorkshire-backed driver set about redressing the balance and posted his best lap of the race on the seventh tour – 1m24.357 seconds, just 0.2 seconds shy of the best of the race.
Pressuring fourth placed Rory Butcher for the remainder of the 18-lapper, Daniel just couldn’t quite find a way by so had to settle for a frustrating fifth place in the end. Added to his earlier fourth place result from round seven, Daniel rounded out the Oulton Park weekend fourth in the championship.
“I got a great start, I was all over him [Michael Meadows] and I thought a win was definitely on but when I got to the hairpin Meadows got caught-out on the coolant from lap one and backed me up, which meant I got caught out on it too”, explained Daniel after race two, “I got the worst of it, [Jonas] Gelzinis passed through and at Knickerbrook I hit the coolant there square-on and that was it really.
“Everyone we’re battling with in the championship scored bigger points than us so I’m disappointed with that. Fourth and fifth is ok for the weekend but we had the pace here to be on the podium at least and probably have had another win.”
Daniel started his weekend on Thursday, 7th June, with a visit to the Stoke-on-Trent headquarters of tyre supplier Michelin UK for a special ‘meet and greet’ event. He then travelled up to Oulton Park in readiness for the pre-event test on Friday, 8th June, where he welcomed guests from the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice – his chosen charity for 2012.
When he got behind the wheel of his Porsche during the rain-affected test sessions Daniel was instantly on the pace and set the third quickest lap. Although his track time in qualifying on Saturday, 9th June, was limited due to a problem with a water pipe, he was again right at the sharp end.
Starting the opening race from fourth on the grid Daniel maintained the place through Old Hall despite being pushed wide over the kerbs and did mount a challenge for the podium during the first half of the 18 lap encounter. His fastest lap of the race, meanwhile, was within 0.1 seconds of the best of all.
Having received a knock to the rear of his car though, Daniel had to fight hard to hold his position as the race wore on but impressively saw off Rory Butcher’s challenge with great determination, keeping the 0.5 second gap necessary to retain fourth place.
Next on the calendar for the West Yorkshireman will be the second of his two ‘home’ events, rounds nine and 10 of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship at Croft Circuit near Darlington over the weekend 23rd/24th June.
