Points Leader Charlie Robertson Aiming For More Ginetta Junior Wins
2nd June 2012
Whyteleafe teenager Charlie Robertson aims to enhance his lead in the Ginetta Junior Championship driver standings when the 2012 season resumes at Oulton Park Island Circuit next weekend, 9th/10th June, after scorching to the top of the points table with his first ever winning double last time out.
Charlie was in a class of his own during the previous event at Thruxton in Hampshire five weeks ago, claiming his first ever ‘weekend double’ with clear, unchallenged victories in the rain-affected fifth and sixth rounds of the season.
Rocketing from fourth in the driver standings into the championship lead, the 15-year-old feels his season is now truly on track after some dreadful misfortune during the opening two events of the year at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit and Donington Park.
Despite a puncture while leading during round one at Brands Hatch and being run off the circuit into a high-speed retirement at Donington during round four, he has still managed to take three wins from the first six races at the wheel of his Investigo and Ria Capital Markets-backed Ginetta G40.
Charlie’s pace is unquestioned and with the added confidence from his outstanding Thruxton performance still fresh in his mind, the Caterham School pupil cannot wait for rounds seven and eight to begin.
“It’s been a long break since the last two races so I can’t wait to be back in the car during testing next Friday”, said the HHC Motorsport driver, “Thruxton was an amazing weekend, it was really challenging with the constant rain and strong winds but that made the wins even more satisfying.
“Now we’ve got the championship lead, I intend to keep hold of it and I’m confident we should be quick at Oulton Park. It’s a fantastic track and I was on the podium there in my first season last year, so I’m aiming for at least two podiums this time and hopefully two more wins.”
The MSA Academy star is widely regarded as one of the UK’s most talented motor racing prospects and remains one of the youngest drivers in Ginetta Junior and car racing as a whole. After finishing second in the championship during his debut season in 2011, the former kart racer has only one goal this year – to claim the coveted title at the tender age of 15.
“I want to go out there and win as many races as possible but the main aim is the championship, that’s why we’re here”, added Charlie, “Even though we had some bad luck early on, Thruxton went completely to plan so we need to keep that consistency going and keep racking up the points. The guys at HHC always give me a great car and I’m sure it’ll be as good as ever at Oulton Park.”
Pre-event testing at Oulton takes place on Friday, 8th June, with free practice, qualifying and round seven of the season following on Saturday, 9th June, at 10.30, 14.20 and 16.45 respectively.
Round eight will get underway at approximately 15.55 on Sunday, 10th June, and will be streamed live online at the itv.com/btcc website. Television coverage will be screened ‘as-live’ on ITV4 and ITV4 HD later in the evening, starting at 20.00, due to a clash in the afternoon with the channel’s coverage of the French Open tennis final.
