Points and progress for Chilton in Barcelona GP2
14th May 2012
Max Chilton added two further points paying finishes to his 2012 GP2 campaign this weekend, after two solid races at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona. The 21 year-old racer has taken seven points finishes from eight race starts so far this season, and added a seventh and fifth place to his tally in Barcelona.
Following an impressive performance in Friday’s qualifying session, Max lined up fourth on the grid for the start of Saturday’s Feature race. The Marussia Carlin driver made a good start but was boxed in at the first corner and fell back to sixth.
Max was keen to make up places lost though, and was making a charge on championship leader Davide Valsecchi, but despite following the Dams car closely, was unable to find a way past on the notoriously difficult to overtake circuit.
As the race entered the mandatory pit stop window, Max was elevated to fourth as James Calado and Fabio Leimer pitted ahead of him, leaving the British racer with some clear air before making his own pit stop on lap 15.
As the pit stop window came to a close and the race positions settled, Max was lying in eighth. However soon enough there were more changes in the top 10 as a drive through penalty for Leimer moved Max up to seventh position where he stayed for the rest of the race – driving defensively in the closing laps against an approaching Luiz Razia just behind him.
Max’s seventh place not only secured further points for his tally, but also second place on the grid for Sunday’s reverse grid Sprint race.
