Points in both GP2 races for Chilton
8th February 2010
Max scored points in both the feature and sprint races with 6th and 8th place finishes in his debut for the Ocean Racing Technology team in Abu Dhabi….
Max delivered a very convincing performance for the Ocean Racing Technology GP2 team on Friday at the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi where the second round of the GP2 Asia championship was held. From17th place on the grid, the 18 year old drove a solid and intelligent race to climb his way back into the top eight by the time the chequered flag fell. By crossing the line in eighth, not only did he secure a point in his debut race, but he also secured pole position for race two.
"It was a good race for me.” He commented afterwards. “The car was excellent and on the last lap, when I knew I had 8th place, I was very happy. Now I’ll start tomorrow’s race from pole and that’s really good for me and the team. I am relaxed tonight, but I think the pressure and the adrenaline will return a few seconds before the race starts tomorrow."
As the lights went out for Saturday’s sprint race start, Max didn't manage to get away well and lost several places in the first turn as a result. Thereafter his race pace was strong and consistent and he resisted attacks from much more experienced drivers for the majority of the race to finish in 6th place.
"I was always fighting for position during the race, running with several cars ahead and behind me, I had to attack and to defend at the same time which never helps in clocking fast laps, which was our aim. I knew the night would be tough because I have only just begun my learning phase in the GP2 Series. I didn't want to take any risks in the last few laps and made sure I secured 6th place. It was a good weekend and I'm looking forward to Bahrain, I'm sure together with Ocean Racing Technology we will get even better results this year."
Max now leaves Abu Dhabi satisfied to have secured points and some very valuable experience for the remainder of the 2010 season. The next races in the Asian series will be in Bahrain on the 26th and 27th February.
