Rally star is reunited with an old friend after 26 years
8th July 2012
at this years Chelsea AutoLegends Festival
Former Finnish rally and race car driver, Harri Toivonen, will be reunited with his 1986 Works Metro 6R4 at this years Chelsea AutoLegends Festival, which takes place on Sunday 2nd September in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea. More than 26 years have passed since Toivonen last sat behind the wheel of the iconic rally car and he is really looking forward to reacquainting himself with his former rallying friend.
The Metro 6R4, which was backed by Unipart, competed in the 1986 British Rally Championship and helped Toivonen to 8th place on the 1,000 Lakes Rally in Toivonens home country of Finland, before rounding the season out with an appearance on the RAC Rally, which unfortunately ended prematurely with an engine failure. The Metro has just returned to the UK after 25 years in the USA and is now owned by John Saunders. Saunders has painstakingly returned the car to its former race condition and is very much looking forward to seeing Toivonen reunited with the car.
The Metro 6R4 will be joining a host of other iconic rally cars on display at Chelsea AutoLegends this year, while the 2012 event will also feature racing cars from the worlds of F1 and Le Mans, a host of motorcycles and an extensive supercar displays. In addition, successful female motorsport protagonists will be the centre of attention at the Castrol Women in Motorsport feature, while the Restoration Corner and Techno Park initiatives will concentrate on the past and future of the automotive world, respectively.
Chelsea AutoLegends organiser Max Wakefield is excited about this years event:
Were thrilled to welcome both Harri Toivonen and the fabulous Metro 6R4 to this years event. Chelsea AutoLegends continues to deliver a mouth-watering array of some of the most beautiful cars in the world and the 6R4 will definitely be a crowd pleaser. We are also really pleased that Harri has agreed to be patron of this years rally car display. Harri continues to be a keen supporter of AutoLegends and enjoys not only seeing the extensive rally car displays but also taking time out of his day to look around the Le Mans cars, which also formed such a large part of his career.
Tickets for this years event are priced at 20 in advance, per person. For those aged 12 16, those prices are reduced to 10, while entry is completely free for those under 12. For those bringing a car or motorcycle of note, which is welcomed by the organisers, the entry fee is 35 for a car and driver, 25 for a motorcycle and rider.
