Rockingham Stages Rally Returns to Rockingham
21st November 2009
ROCKINGHAM STAGES RALLY FITTING FINALE TO FANTASTIC YEAR
FOUR times Rockingham Stages champion Steve Simpson will be looking to make it five in a row when he returns to the Northamptonshire circuit with co-driver Simon Hunter next month (December).
Simpson has held the Rockingham Stages Rally overall championship title since 2005, and alongside Hunter, will be the main pairing to beat over the two-day event on December 4 and 5.
Now in its sixth year, the Rockingham Stages has established itself firmly on the calendar and has become the traditional finale to a fantastic and varied motorsport programme on offer at the circuit.
Joint organisers Thame Motorsport Club and Middlesex County Automobile Club will once again utilise the whole circuit to create 10 challenging tarmac stages with the rally expecting to reach the full 100 capacity of entries.
Each stage is between eight and 10 miles long, and uses a combination of the in-field circuits and banked oval as well as the inner paddock and access tunnels, providing more than 80 miles of competitive motoring.
The action starts on Saturday afternoon with four stages, including two thrilling stages in the dark, with a further six taking place on Sunday, and with the panoramic views of the circuit, spectators will not miss any of the action.
A whole host of machines will be taking part, from MK II Ford Escorts, Peugeot 205s and Vauxhall Astras to the amazing Ford Escort Cosworth WRC car and awesome Darrian T90.
Rockingham Chairman Len O’Hagan, said: “The Rockingham Stages have become a popular fixture on the circuit’s motorsport calendar and is a fitting finale to what has been another fantastic year.
“We are proud to continue our support for rallying at the circuit and look forward to hosting this event each year and the two stages in the dark are just amazing to watch.”
Peter Wood of Thame Motorsport Club, who is the Rally Manager for the event, said: “We are very pleased to be back at this excellent first class venue. The combination of a brilliant road surface, time of year, and stages in the dark add to the unique atmosphere at Rockingham.”
Organisers hope the entertaining Land Rover Rally will return for a fourth year and to be able to add a new Historic Class to the Rockingham Stages.
The action starts at 1pm on Saturday and 10am on Sunday. Entry costs just £10 per car. Visit rockinghamstages.co.uk for more information about the event.
