Sky Sports confirms GP2 and GP3 coverage

3rd February 2012

As expected, Sky Sports has confirmed that its new Sky Sports F1 HD channel will broadcast live coverage of the two main Formula One support series, GP2 and GP3, in the UK in 2012.

The channel, which will be launched in March following Sky Sports' acquisition of live UK rights to Formula One last year, will broadcast races from both championships starting from the second Formula One race of the year in Malaysia.

Sky's executive producer of Formula One Martin Turner said: "We are delighted to be showing GP2 and GP3 live on Sky Sports F1 HD. There are six former GP2 champions in Formula One this season, including Lewis Hamilton and last year's winner Romain Grosjean."

Apart from 2008 champion Giorgio Pantano, every GP2 champion since the series was born in 2005 will be on the Formula One grid this year - Nico Rosberg, Hamilton, Timo Glock, Nico Hulkenberg, Pastor Maldonado and Grosjean.

Sky Sports has yet to release further details of content on its standalone channel, but it will show every Formula One session live.

The BBC has retained free-to-air rights to Formula One, with ten races live and ten shown as delayed highlights packages.
