Snetterton 300 prepares for Pirelli backed GT Cup
28th June 2012
The Pirelli-backed GT Cup Championship, fast approaching the season’s half-way point, will move to Snetterton 300 this weekend for the fourth round of the competitive race series (30 June-1 July).
The eight-round GT Cup Championship has welcomed a series of changes for 2012 with the introduction of GT3 homologated cars onto the grid for the very first time. Leading the championship is Derek Johnston in his Ferrari 458 with 214 points. Kevin Riley is second in a Mosler MT900 GT with 159 points and just four points behind Riley is Martin Short in a Mosler Super GT.
The action will consist of one qualifying session followed by three sprint races, and Pirelli will be once again on hand to supply slick tyres in DM and DH and wet tyres in WS and WH compounds to all crews. To help cater for the various cars that will be present on the grid, a range of different tyre sizes will be on offer to competitors.
Pirelli Tyre UK operations manager, Matthew Corby, said: “The Pirelli-backed GT Cup is one of the most spectacular racing championships that we have in the UK and the competition has been fiercely fought throughout the opening three rounds of the season. The MINI Challenge will also be running alongside the GT Cup Championship this weekend, and Pirelli will be on hand to provide both championships with the control tyre. We’re looking forward to what is expected to be a closely-fought and thrilling two days of racing ahead.”
GT Cup Championship organiser, Marc Haynes, commented: "It's a very dynamic season taking shape with competitors from each of the three GT Cup Championships race groups being in podium positions for the hunt for the overall championship title. The leader has recently changed hands after Brands Hatch from Martin Short with his Mosler to Derek Johnson and his 458 Ferrari. It’s still all to play for and very exciting. With the Chevron of Jordan Witt being at Goodwood this weekend and Martin Short not entered, Snetterton is going to be a crucial mid season round for those wanting to build their championship positions."
The GT Cup Championship will be broadcast on Motors TV
